FullCodePress 07

By Roger Burrell

FullCodePress logoOn Saturday 18 August 2007, web teams from Australia and New Zealand will compete to build a fully-operational website for a non-profit organisation in 24 hours.

We are proud to announce that Sarah Peeke, Geofeat's own web designer, has been short listed as 'Project Designer' for the Australian team. The three finalists for each position will be placed in a hat and a winner drawn at random.

FullCodePress is a series of web competitions - the brainchild of the people at Webstock and WIPA. In essence it's a geek Olympics!

The concept is simple. Web teams take each other on, at the same location, to build a complete website in 24 hours. No excuses, no extensions, no budget overruns.

STOP PRESS

The wait is finally over! The Australian and New Zealand teams have been announced, and Sarah has been chosen to join the Australian team.

Congratulations to both teams, and to all who made it to the short list.

Los Angeles Times "Altered Oceans" Series

By Roger Burrell

Ocean sealsKenneth R. Weiss and Usha Lee McFarling of the Los Angeles Times are the 2007 winners of the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment. Weiss and McFarling will receive this prestigious prize for their five-part series, Altered Oceans, about a profound disturbance in the ecology of the world's oceans.

This extraordinary series gives life to all those generalities about the decline of the oceans in a way that should grab the imaginations, not only of politicians responsible for taking corrective steps, but also of ordinary readers.

  • Part 1: Crucial habitats are falling victims to the changing chemistry of the oceans.
  • Part 2: Toxic algae and bacteria are poisoning marine mammals and other sea life.
  • Part 3: Red tides multiply and worsen, and the winds carry their toxins ashore.
  • Part 4: Seaborne plastic debris poses a lethal hazard to wildlife.
  • Part 5: Sea water is turning acidic, threatening fish, coral and other marine life.

The full series can be viewed at LA Times - Altered Oceans, which features a multimedia presentation including videos, photos and graphics.

The Good Oil on Flaxseed

By Toni Jordan

Flaxseed, mortar & pestleThis ancient plant has always been important to mankind. But now, instead of being used to make cloth, flax is being heralded as a solution to two of modern civilisation's greatest ills: cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

Flaxseed is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, containing twice the amount of omega-3s than fish. The most important omega-3 found in flaxseed is called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an essential fatty acid, which means the body can't make it and it must come from the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are at quite low levels in the Australian diet, and many authorities recommend we increase our intake of omega-3 fats.
