Geofeat International is pleased to announce that as of 1 September 2007 the company website will be run entirely on power generated from renewable sources.
An array of 120 solar panels powers the complete website hosting data center (and associated offices), where our website is hosted.
Through the use of solar panels, electricity is generated without producing any pollution or greenhouse gases.
Commitment to the Environment
This is a big step forward, and fits in nicely with the Geofeat philosophy, also shared by our advertisers: Think globally, act locally.
And it's not just the electricity generation that's green - the data centre that hosts the Geofeat website was recently rebuilt using the lowest embedded energy inputs.
Lighting
The use of solar lighting tubes provides all the office lighting needs throughout the day.
For night time use, the current compact fluorescent light bulbs are being replaced with LED lighting. This will reduce electricity usage further, and produce less toxic waste at the end of the life of the globes. Compact fluorescent bulbs present a landfill problem because the mercury from many bulbs can escape and contribute to air and water pollution.
Green Roof
Plans are also in place to install a green roof for the data center which, once installed, will help to reduce cooling and heating requirements by up to 50%.
In addition, environmentally friendly insulation currently gives the building an R-Value 
equal to R50.
Impressive Results
According to BP Solar , this solar panel system will eliminate the production of:
- 19,890 pounds (9,021 kgs) of Carbon Dioxide (CO2/GHG) per year
- 5.9 pounds (2.67 kgs) of Nitrous Oxide (N2O/smog) per year
- 0.45 pounds (200 grams) of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2/acid rain) per year.
This is the equivalent of planting 3.5 acres of trees per year, or driving a vehicle for 24,671 miles (39,700 kms) - almost 10 trips from Los Angeles to New York.
